Cascaded Leadership Simulation

The challenges of distributed leadership are different from those of direct management. Managers with broader control must weigh the needs of multiple constituents and think strategically about the highest-value use of their time. They must balance operational and strategic awareness, knowing when to step in and when to step back.

The Cascaded Leadership Simulation challenges participants to step into the role of a regional manager responsible for multiple districts of retail stores. After reviewing financial reports of historical store performance, teams of participants determine priorities for field visits and activities. The teams then make simulation decisions addressing a series of issues revealed during store visits. They must also review performance profiles for each of their district managers and tailor their management style and actions to each accordingly. As participants make decisions about each issue, they are challenged to think both strategically and tactically. They must balance the long-term leadership development of district managers with the occasional need to intervene directly to drive short-term results.
