Developing New Leaders

New Leaders

Help new leaders transition from contributing individually to achieving results through others.

Developing New Leaders

Strong performers are often promoted to their first management role for superior technical skills and their ability to drive results, but they may not have people or organizational leadership experience. Our Developing New Leaders leadership development program and business simulation enable new leaders to practice leadership skills in a risk-free environment, cultivate their abilities, and develop a perspective that will allow them to drive success. This program is for new leaders with or without direct reports.

In a New Leaders program, leaders learn to:

Frequently Asked Questions

This program is designed for new leaders or leaders without formal leadership training, typically strong individual contributors who have been promoted into management or flagged for possible promotion. These are people who have demonstrated technical excellence but may not yet have experience driving results through others.

Rather than lectures or leadership theory, participants learn by doing through a business simulation that lets new leaders practice real decisions in a risk-free environment. They also learn from peers and an expert facilitator, building confidence and skills before facing challenges on the job.

Participants work in teams as a new leader responsible for managing a team and delivering results, making decisions about how to lead individuals, focus their time, and communicate across the organization. Each round produces consequences — in team performance, stakeholder relationships, and business results — that become the material for debrief and reflection.

Participants develop four core capabilities: setting direction through communication, prioritization, and holding others accountable; developing people; working across boundaries; and thinking strategically.

Participants leave better equipped to lead through others rather than defaulting to doing the work themselves, the central challenge of the new leader transition. They'll have a clearer framework for developing team members, stronger instincts for communicating across the organization, and more confidence applying strategic thinking to decisions in their role.

A sample two-day agenda is pictured on this page. The experience moves through themes woven together with simulation rounds and reflection so participants are applying concepts in real time. Because programs are customized, the exact flow will vary. But we will partner with you to design an experience that fits your timeline and learning goals.

The program is highly flexible. It can be delivered in as little as four hours or over a full four days, depending on your goals and constraints. It's available both virtually and in person.

Customization is a core part of how we work. Whatever your ideal program flow or calendar constraints, the New Leaders program can be tailored to your specific learning objectives and organizational context.
